The latest developments in digital marketing

- 19 May 2025
Marketing is evolving—fast. AI is opening a whole new world of possibilities, while storytelling and brand building are making a comeback. As audiences become harder to reach and even harder to impress, the challenge for marketers isn't just keeping up; it's staying relevant and ahead of the curve.
That's why CIM's Digital Marketing Conference on 17th June comes at a crucial moment. The event will look at the technologies, strategies, and mindsets shaping the next phase of digital marketing.
As Bogdan Toma, partner at McKinsey, puts it: "We are currently experiencing the fastest and most fundamental shift in marketing capabilities and operating models since the explosion of digital media." So where do we stand now, and how can marketers prepare for what's next? Here are some of the key trends defining digital marketing in 2025.
Current trends: personalisation, AI and the return of brand building
Personalisation continues to drive the digital marketing conversation in 2025. Consumer expectations are rising, and marketers are under pressure to deliver experiences that feel timely and relevant yet still tailored. According to Jim Rudall, regional director, EMEA at Intuit Mailchimp, this isn't a passing fad but a total shift in audience behaviour: "Nearly a quarter (23%) of UK consumers want to see more personalised brand campaigns—and crucially, almost two-thirds (62%) are willing to share their data if it results in meaningful personalisation."
